Annual observance teaches teens the truth about addiction during National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week
January 27, 2016 – The White Sands Treatment Center family is excited to kick off the National Institute of Health’s (NIH) annual National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week (#NDAFW), happening Monday, January 25 to Sunday, January 31. This yearly occurrence is devoted to teens and helping them understand the facts about drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. By joining teens with drug and alcohol experts and scientists who study the effects of addiction, the weeklong observance aims to shatter the myths around drug and alcohol abuse. Often times, teens are given misinformation when it comes to alcohol and drugs, whether through the Internet, movies, music, or their peers. During the National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week, events and activities are put on around the U. S. that share correct information with teens about the damage drugs and alcohol can do on their body, their performance and their life.
The annual observance has done a great job with getting more communities involved in the lives of teens and supplying them with the proper information they need when it comes to alcohol and drugs. Recent studies show that over 20 percent of high school seniors have used marijuana in the past month and a third of all seniors report using some type of illicit drug in the past year. These statistics expose the critical need for teens to be given accurate information about the effects of drugs on their lives and offer an opportunity for them to then share this correct information with their peers.
At White Sands Substance Abuse Treatment Center, our goal is to provide individuals with addiction issues and their support system the proper information and a wide variety of multi-modal, multi-disciplinary treatment and therapy options. We are committed to helping people through the journey of recovery and reaching their full potential. Our programs address the fact that alcohol and drug abuse and addiction affects both the mind and the body, which is why we incorporate dual diagnosis treatment programs in our Center. In addition, our group and family therapy programs allow family members to be involved in the addict’s recovery journey. Plus, our comprehensive blog offers visitors, addicts, friends and family an opportunity to learn more about a wide range of addiction topics. In fact, our blog posts provide ideal material to share with teenagers during National Drug & Alcohol Facts Week. Teens can learn more about addiction and the detailed and involved process known as recovery. They will also learn about the negative effects these drugs can have on their body and physical health, which could be a deterrent regarding possible drug use in the future.
