Tips for Preventing Drug RelapseOnce you have been addicted to a drug, maintaining your sobriety is always going to be a challenge. Even though you have been through detox, attended addiction therapy, and worked on overcoming your triggers, you still have to be vigilant because you are always at an increased risk of a relapse.

To aid you in your struggle to stay strong in the face of the temptations you face in the outside world, we’ve put together some tips for preventing drug relapse that should help. 

1.) Continue your treatment plan

Once you have finished your initial addiction treatment program, it can be tempting to think you are done and can go live your life without care. Addiction recovery plans include long-term follow-up treatment for a reason, though. You will have a much better chance at avoiding a relapse if you keep in mind that recovery is an on-going life choice, not a one-time event. Stick to your long-term follow-up plan. Continue having weekly meetings with your counselor, take any prescribed medication as directed, and keep developing your coping skills.

2.) Avoid high-risk situations 

Now that you’ve completed drug rehab, you have a good idea what your particular triggers are that can push you towards using again, so you can take steps to avoid them. Position yourself so you avoid places where you used in the past, such as bars or restaurants where you socialized with other addicts. Stay away from gatherings where you will be surrounded by former associates and friends who are still using.

3.) Get enough rest

Hunger and fatigue are known triggers that can make recovering addicts vulnerable to relapse. Nutrition plays a key role in staying strong against the cravings that provoke relapses, so making sure you eat healthy meals and snacks on a set schedule is one of the easiest ways to avoid addiction relapse. Sleeping patterns are easily disturbed in individuals who have abused drugs, so it is important to try to stick to a regular schedule. Make sure you get enough rest, eat properly, and try to minimize stress as much as possible.

4.) Go to a meeting

Twelve-step groups are some of the best sources for help in your ongoing struggle to avoid a drug relapse. You can get advice from caring, concerned people who have been where you are and are willing to pass on proven relapse prevention techniques for substance abuse. Meetings are available daily in virtually every town or city, so you are never far from help.

5.) Ask for help

If you find yourself in danger of relapsing and using drugs again, get help immediately. Trying to “tough it out” on your own is one of the worst mistakes that a recovering drug addict can make. Call for help and support right away. Contact your counselor, your sponsor, a mental health provider, or someone in the support network you developed in rehab. Knowing you have supportive help can be exactly what you need to make it through a difficult situation without a relapse.
